Bryce Edgmon (born May 3, 1961) is an important leader in Alaska. He is a member of the Alaska House of Representatives. This means he helps make laws for the state. He represents the 37th District, which covers a large area of Alaska.
This area includes parts of the Kodiak Island Borough and other regions. He served as the Speaker of the House from 2017 to 2021. The Speaker is like the leader of the House of Representatives. As of 2024, he is the longest-serving member in the Alaska House.
Bryce Edgmon's Early Life and Family
Bryce Edgmon grew up in Dillingham, Alaska. He spent over twenty years fishing for salmon and herring. This was his job before he became a politician. He also led the board of Choggiung Ltd. This is a special company for Alaska Native villages.
His family has Aleut heritage. He was raised in a home where people spoke the Yup'ik language. Bryce Edgmon is married to Melody Nibeck. They have three children named Evan, Emma, and Magy. He earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of Alaska, Anchorage.
Bryce Edgmon's Political Journey
Bryce Edgmon began his political career in 2006. He ran against Carl Moses for a seat in the House. The election was very close. Both candidates received the exact same number of votes. They had to decide the winner with a coin toss! Bryce Edgmon won the coin toss.
In 2016, his political party won many seats. This led to him becoming the Speaker of the Alaska House. He was the first Alaskan Native person to hold this high position. As Speaker, he helped guide the work of the House.
Besides being Speaker, he had other important roles. He was a leader on committees like Health & Social Services. He also worked on committees for Commerce and Arctic Policy. Before becoming Speaker, he worked on the House Finance Committee. He helped decide how money was spent for public safety and corrections. He also led committees focused on energy and fisheries.
