Bryja is a traditional dish, a bit like a thin porridge or mash. It's made from grains like oats or millet, cooked until they are very soft. This simple but important food was a basic meal for ancient Germanic, Celtic, and Slavic people.
Today, Bryja is also a special dish in Silesia, a region in Poland. It is often served during Wigilia, which is the traditional Christmas Eve supper. The name "Bryja" and its similar forms like breja or Brei in German, actually come from old Celtic languages!
Different Kinds of Bryja
Even though Bryja is usually a savory dish, it can also be made into delicious sweets! One example is kutia, a sweet dish often made with poppy seeds.
There's also a traditional Silesian sweet version of Bryja. This one is made with fruits like plums, apples, and pears. To make it even tastier, people add śmietana (a type of sour cream), wheat flour, cinnamon, sugar, and a pinch of salt.
