Washington's Lookout: A Secret Spot
Buckberg is home to a special place called Washington's Lookout. This spot was used by famous American leaders like General George Washington and Colonel “Mad” Anthony Wayne. They used this high point to plan a surprise attack on British troops during the Battle of Stony Point. From Washington's Lookout, they could see far across Haverstraw Bay and the Hudson River, which was perfect for watching enemy movements.
Today, this historic spot is part of "Washington-Wayne Lookout Park." This park is about 5.2 acres (2.1 hectares) in size. It was bought in 2000 by a group led by the Open Space Institute. They wanted to protect this important piece of history for everyone to enjoy. Funds for the park were provided by the Lila Acheson and DeWitt Wallace Fund for the Hudson Highlands.
