History of Buckhead
The town of Buckhead became an official town in 1908. This happened when the Georgia General Assembly decided to make it a recognized town.
How Buckhead Got Its Name
People say that Buckhead got its name from an old story. Long ago, some hunters shot a deer in the area. They then put the deer's head, which is called a "buck's head," on a tree for everyone to see. This event gave the town its special name.
Geography of Buckhead
Buckhead is found in the southeastern part of Morgan County. It is about 7 miles (11 km) east-southeast of Madison, which is the main town of the county.
Location and Nearby Roads
Interstate 20, a major highway, runs about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Buckhead. You can get to the town from Exit 121, which is called Seven Islands Road. If you travel on I-20, Buckhead is about 65 miles (105 km) east of Atlanta. It is also about 85 miles (137 km) west of Augusta.
Land and Water Features
The United States Census Bureau says that Buckhead covers about 0.8 square miles (2.1 square kilometers) of land. A very small part of this area, about 0.008 square miles (0.02 square kilometers), is water. Rivers and creeks help drain the town. The northern parts of Buckhead drain into the Apalachee River. The southern parts drain into Sugar Creek. Both of these flow southeast into the Oconee River.
