What Was the Buddhist Crisis?
The Buddhist Crisis was a period of strong tension in South Vietnam. It involved the government and Buddhist leaders. The government's actions caused many protests. These protests were mainly led by Buddhist monks.
Why Did the Crisis Start?
Most people in South Vietnam were Buddhist. Some surveys said that 70-90 percent of the population followed Buddhism. However, President Ngô Đình Diệm was Catholic. His government showed favoritism towards Catholics.
Unfair Treatment of Buddhists
The government gave special treatment to Catholics. This included better jobs in public service and the military. Catholics also received more land, business help, and tax breaks. President Diệm even told an officer to put Catholic officers in important positions. He believed they could be trusted more.
Many officers in the South Vietnamese army changed to Catholicism. They thought it would help their careers. Some were even denied promotions if they did not convert. Also, weapons given to village defense groups only went to Catholics. These groups were meant to fight Viet Cong fighters.
Some Catholic priests had their own armed groups. In some areas, they forced people to convert. They also damaged Buddhist religious sites, called pagodas. Some Buddhist villages changed their religion to get help or avoid being moved by the government.
Special Rules for Catholics
The Catholic Church had special benefits. In 1959, President Ngô Đình Diệm even dedicated the country to the Virgin Mary. The Vatican flag was often flown at public events. But the Buddhist flag was not allowed to be flown in public. This made Buddhists feel discriminated against.
