History of Buena Vista
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Because of this, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. This means it is connected to the U.S. but has its own government.
Counting the People: The Census
In 1899, the United States Department of War did a count of everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. It helps governments understand how many people live in an area.
At that time, the area now known as Buena Vista was called Hoyo Mulas. The census showed that 1,245 people lived there.
A New Name for the Barrio
The name of the barrio changed from Hoyo Mulas to Buena Vista in 2010. This new name means "Good View" in Spanish.
