Bugs Bunny's Christmas Carol is a fun, eight-minute animated short film. It was made by Warner Bros. Television and DePatie–Freleng Enterprises. This cartoon first came out in 1979. It was part of a bigger Christmas TV special called Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales.

This cartoon is a special version of a very famous story. It's based on A Christmas Carol, a classic book written by Charles Dickens in 1843. In this cartoon, familiar Looney Tunes characters play the main roles. Yosemite Sam plays the grumpy old man, Ebenezer Scrooge. Porky Pig is his kind employee, Bob Cratchit. And Bugs Bunny takes on two roles: Scrooge's old business partner, Jacob Marley, and Scrooge's cheerful nephew, Fred. Instead of Scrooge visiting ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, Bugs Bunny dresses up as a spooky ghost to teach Scrooge a lesson!

What Happens in the Story

Scrooge's Mean Spirit

The story begins with Scrooge, played by Yosemite Sam, in his office. He is busy counting his money. His employee, Bob Cratchit, played by Porky Pig, is very cold. He asks Scrooge if he can have a small piece of coal to warm up. Scrooge refuses, saying Cratchit should have made his last piece of coal last longer. He tells Cratchit to just work faster to stay warm.

Soon after, Scrooge's nephew, Fred, played by Bugs Bunny, arrives. Fred brings Christmas decorations and mistletoe, trying to spread some holiday cheer. But Scrooge quickly throws him out. Fred then decides that someone needs to help Scrooge find his Christmas spirit. He secretly gives Cratchit a piece of coal for his office. Cratchit is very thankful.

Trouble for Cratchit

However, Scrooge's cat, Sylvester, sees Fred giving Cratchit the coal. Sylvester tells Scrooge. Scrooge gets angry and takes the coal back. He then fires Cratchit! Scrooge also throws out some carolers that Fred had let into the office. These carolers are played by Elmer Fudd, Pepé Le Pew, and Foghorn Leghorn.

Cratchit invites Fred to dinner. There, Fred meets Cratchit's youngest son, Tiny Tim, played by Tweety Bird. Bugs Bunny's character, Fred, notes that Tiny Tim looks small. Tiny Tim cleverly replies, "If you had to live on birdseed, you'd be puny too!" Things get worse for Cratchit. Scrooge sends people to take away Cratchit's last candle. He also sends a notice that Cratchit's house will be taken away by midnight. This means Cratchit and his family have to move out. Fred decides he's had enough of Scrooge's meanness. He says Bugs Bunny's famous line, "Of course, you realize that this means war."

Bugs Bunny's Plan

Fred starts his plan to change Scrooge. First, he brings more carolers to annoy Scrooge. When Scrooge goes outside to stop them, he slips and falls into a big pile of snow. Next, Fred puts snow into Scrooge's hot bath. This turns the water ice-cold just as Scrooge jumps in.

Then, Fred dresses up as a ghost. He pretends to be Scrooge's old business partner, Jacob Marley. As Marley, he drags noisy chains and beats a drum. Scrooge goes to investigate the strange sounds. He accidentally slips down the stairs and lands in the cold snow with Sylvester. When they finally get back to bed, Marley reappears. Sylvester quickly runs away, slamming the door behind him and leaving Scrooge alone. Marley threatens to take Scrooge to see "the man in the red suit." Scrooge first thinks Marley means Santa Claus, but Marley is actually talking about the Devil.

Scrooge Changes His Ways

After Marley's scary visit, Scrooge quickly decides to become a better person. To show he has changed, he dresses up as Santa Claus. He runs through the streets at night, giving money to poor people, widows, and orphans. He also rehires Bob Cratchit. Not only that, he makes Cratchit his new business partner, taking Marley's old place. Tweety Bird raises a toast to Scrooge, and Fred gives him a kiss. Scrooge, now called Sam, still doesn't like kissing, though!

This story is the first part of Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales. As the second part, featuring Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner (called Freeze Frame), begins, Bugs congratulates Sam. Bugs says Sam did a great job making Scrooge a kind person. But Sam tells Bugs it was all just a play. He then demands that Porky and the others give all his money back!
