Bullard is a small town located in Smith and Cherokee counties in the eastern part of Texas. It's about 15 miles south of the bigger city of Tyler. Important roads like U.S. Route 69 and other local roads meet here. In 2020, about 3,318 people lived in Bullard, which is more than the 2,463 people who lived there in 2010.

The part of Bullard in Smith County is considered part of the Tyler big city area. The part in Cherokee County is linked to the smaller city area of Jacksonville.

Before it was called Bullard, the town had other names like "Etna" and "Hewsville". The town got its current name from John H. Bullard and his wife, Emma Eugenia (Erwin) Bullard. John Bullard opened the Hewsville post office in his store in 1881. Later, in 1883, the Etna post office closed, and the Hewsville office was renamed "Bullard". Many people in the countryside nearby use the Bullard post office. The arrival of the railroad helped Bullard grow while Etna faded away.

History of Bullard

Settlers first came to the area around Bullard in the early 1850s. The Etna post office, located just west of where Bullard is now, opened in 1867. John and Emma Bullard moved to the area around 1870.

How Bullard Got Its Name

In 1881, a new post office called Hewsville opened in the Bullards' store. Two years later, in 1883, the Etna post office closed. Then, the Hewsville post office was renamed "Bullard" after John H. Bullard.

Railroad and Growth

When the Kansas and Gulf Short Line Railroad built its tracks from Tyler to Lufkin, it went right through Bullard. The railroad built a station there, which brought new people and businesses to the town. By 1890, Bullard had about 200 residents. It had most of the important businesses, a doctor, and even a telegraph office. The railroad changed its name a few times over the years.

Schools and Population Changes

In 1903, Bullard had two public schools, one for white students and one for Black students. They had five teachers in total and taught 186 students. By 1914, the town's population had grown to 400 people. The railroad changed its name again to the St. Louis Southwestern Railroad.

After World War II, the population was 450. The community officially formed a city council in 1948. By the mid-1960s, the population dropped to 300, but it grew back to 573 by 1973. Today, Bullard is centered around its main roads. Many people who live in Bullard travel to nearby Tyler for work.

Geography of Bullard

Bullard is located in the southern part of Smith County. A small part of the town also reaches into Cherokee County to the south. The four-lane U.S. Route 69 runs along the east side of Bullard. This highway goes north to Tyler and south to Jacksonville.
