Buluggin ibn Ziri was an important ruler from a long time ago. He was the first leader of the Zirid dynasty, a powerful family of Berbers in a region called Ifriqiya (which is now parts of North Africa). He ruled from 972 to 984.

A suburb in the city of Algiers, called Bologhine, is named after him.

Buluggin's Early Life and Building Cities

Buluggin was born in a place called Titteri, which is in modern-day Algeria. His father, Ziri ibn Manad, was a leader in the central Maghreb region.

Buluggin himself was a great builder! He founded the city of Algiers in 960. He also helped build other cities like Médéa and Miliana. He even rebuilt villages that had been destroyed by fighting.

Becoming a Powerful Ruler

In 971, Buluggin's father died in a battle. The Fatimid leader, Al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah, then chose Buluggin to be the new ruler, or Emir, of the Maghreb. This was a very important job.

Buluggin was given control over many areas. He even received regions that another leader, Jaʿfar ibn ʿAlī, used to rule. The Fatimids moved their main court from Mahdia to Cairo. After this, Buluggin became the main leader of Ifriqiya, with Kairouan as its capital city.

Expanding His Territory

Buluggin continued to fight against other groups, like the Zenatas. Some groups, like the Maghrawa, asked for help from the Umayyads of Cordoba to get their lands back.

But Buluggin was very strong. He took control of almost all of the Maghreb region. He defeated many groups, including the Maghrawa and the Hawwaras. Many prisoners were moved to a settlement called Ashir.

The Fatimids had taken their money and navy with them to Egypt. This meant Buluggin's government had to work hard to become strong. They also lost control over Sicily because the navy was gone.

Buluggin conquered cities like Fez and Sijilmasa. He took control of most of Morocco, reaching the Atlantic coast. He fought against the Bargawata people during a campaign in Morocco. However, the Caliphate of Córdoba kept control of Ceuta and Tangiers.

Even though he was powerful, Buluggin still worked for the Fatimids. He had to pay them tribute. He also had advisors who helped him but also watched over him for the Fatimids.

Buluggin's Titles and Last Years

The Fatimid leader gave Buluggin special titles. He was called Abu al-Futuh, which means "Father of Victories." He was also called Sayf ad-Dawla, meaning "Sword of Empire."

In 977, the new Fatimid leader, Abu Mansur Nizar al-Aziz Billah, gave Buluggin even more cities. These included Tripoli, Ajdabiya, and Sirte. He continued to conquer cities like Fez and Sijilmassa.

He tried to take Ceuta, but it was too strong. He saw many fighters coming from Andalusia by sea, so he turned back. He also punished the leader of the Barghawata people in 979. He brought back many people from Morocco. People in Ifriqiya were surprised because they had never seen so many people brought back before.

Buluggin ibn Ziri died in May 984. His son, Al-Mansur, took over as ruler after him.
