Ziri ibn Manad facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ziri ibn Manad (died in 971) was a powerful leader who started the Zirid dynasty in a region called the Maghreb. This area is in North Africa and includes modern-day Algeria.

Ziri ibn Manad was a chief of the Takalata, a group within the Sanhajah people. The Kutama Berbers were also part of this large group. Ziri was a strong supporter of the Fatimids, who were a powerful ruling family. He helped them defeat a big rebellion led by Abu Yazid between 943 and 947. Because of his help, the Fatimid ruler, Caliph al-Mansur bi-Nasr Allah, made Ziri the governor of the western provinces. This area was roughly where modern Algeria is today, north of the Sahara desert.

Building New Cities

Ziri ibn Manad was also a builder. In 935, he had a special home built in a place called Achir. This was south of where the city of Algiers would later be. He brought skilled workers like masons and joiners from M'sila and Tubna to build a strong fortress. Once it was finished, many important people moved there, including scholars, merchants, and lawyers. Ziri also started making his own money and paying his soldiers with cash.

His son, Buluggin ibn Ziri, followed in his footsteps. Buluggin founded important cities like Algiers, Miliana, and Médéa (also known as Lamdiya). He also helped rebuild towns that had been destroyed during the rebellion.

Military Successes

In 959, Ziri led a successful military campaign and conquered Fez in Morocco. When he returned home, he showed off the defeated ruler of Fez and another leader, Ibn Wasul of Sijilmasa. This was a way to show his power and victory.

Ziri's Legacy

Ziri ibn Manad was killed in a battle in June or July of 971. He was fighting against the lord of M'sila, named Ja'far Ibn 'Ali al-andalusi al-Maghrawi. After Ziri's death, his son Buluggin ibn Ziri took over as governor. In 972, Buluggin became the Viceroy of Ifriqiya. This happened when the Fatimid rulers moved their main court to Egypt.
