Burger Baron started in 1957. A person named Jack McDonnell founded it. It began in either Calgary or Lethbridge, Alberta. The exact first location is not fully clear.

Burger Baron was special because it was the first drive-in restaurant chain in Western Canada. This meant you could drive up and order food from your car! The company grew fast across the region.

Challenges and Changes

However, big American fast-food chains soon came to the area. This made things tough for Burger Baron. The original company that managed the restaurants went out of business.

Today, Burger Baron restaurants are run independently. This means each restaurant is owned and operated by different people. Because of this, their menus, recipes, and even their signs can be different.

Where to Find Burger Baron

There are still many Burger Baron locations across Western Canada. Most of them are found around Edmonton and in smaller towns in Alberta. Many of the owners are Lebanese Canadians. They are often connected to Rudy Kemaldean, who bought his first Burger Baron in 1965. He hired family and friends, and they were encouraged to open their own Burger Baron restaurants.

Famous Fans

Burger Baron is also known for being supported by famous people. For example, Glen Sather, a former coach for the Edmonton Oilers hockey team, has endorsed them. Other former Edmonton Oilers players have also shown their support.

Old Buildings, New Restaurants

Some Burger Baron buildings used to be other restaurants. Five of them were once part of a local Burger King chain. This local chain was a big competitor to Burger Baron. That local Burger King chain stopped existing when the worldwide Burger King company took over the name in northern Alberta in 1995.

Interestingly, the local Burger King chain had also previously managed Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants. So, some of their buildings had the classic KFC design. One Burger Baron on 111 Avenue 95 Street used to be the main office for the local Burger King and also had a Burger King/Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant.

What's on the Menu?

Burger Baron restaurants offer many kinds of burgers. Some unique ones include the "Salisbury Burger" and the "Pizza Burger." The mushroom burger is often the most popular choice.

In recent years, some Burger Baron locations have also started serving Halifax-style donairs. Donairs are a type of meat wrap, popular in Eastern Canada.
