Burleigh is a small, unincorporated community located in the northeastern part of Austin County, in the state of Texas. Being "unincorporated" means it doesn't have its own city government. It's part of the larger Greater Houston area. According to the Handbook of Texas, about 69 people lived here between 1972 and 2000.

Exploring Burleigh's Location
Burleigh is found about 6.7 miles (10.8 km) southeast of a town called Bellville. You can find it where two roads, FM 529 and FM 331, meet. From Burleigh, FM 529 goes east for about 33.5 miles (53.9 km) and connects to State Highway 6 near Houston.
Roads and Rivers Near Burleigh
FM 331 also connects to State Highway 36, which is about 5.9 miles (9.5 km) to the south. For a short distance, FM 331 and FM 529 share the same road in Burleigh. The Brazos River is quite close, only about 1.6 miles (2.6 km) east on FM 529. Burleigh is also about 26 miles (42 km) southeast of Brenham.
A Look at Burleigh's Past
The eastern part of Austin County, where Burleigh is, was first settled way back in the 1820s. However, the community of Burleigh itself started to appear later, in the late 1800s.
Early Services and Population
In 1893, a post office opened inside a general store in Burleigh, making it easier for people to send and receive mail. This post office stayed open until 1913. In 1968, about 150 people lived in Burleigh. By 1972, the population was around 69 people, and it stayed that size through the year 2000. In the early 1980s, Burleigh had three churches.
Historical Sites
An interesting historical fact about Burleigh is that Camp Gillespie, a prison used during the American Civil War by the Confederate side, was located here.
Learning in Burleigh
Education has always been important in Burleigh. In 1918, the community had its own school with 62 students attending. Later, in the early 1880s, there were even two schools. Today, students in Burleigh attend schools that are part of the Bellville Independent School District.
