Burnside is a city in Pulaski County, Kentucky, United States. It is known as a "home rule-class city," which means it has the power to manage its own local affairs. In 2020, the population of Burnside was 694 people. The city is located near Lake Cumberland, a large artificial lake.

Burnside has changed its rules over time to allow certain businesses to sell alcoholic beverages. This has helped some local businesses, especially those near the lake. For example, Lee's Ford Marina, located on Fishing Creek along Lake Cumberland, was included in Burnside's area so it could sell drinks.

History of Burnside

How Burnside Got Its Name

The area where Burnside is located was first settled where the Cumberland River meets its South Fork. It was originally called Point Isabel. People say it was named after a woman who jumped off a nearby cliff. In 1890, the town was renamed to honor Civil War General Ambrose Burnside. He had set up a camp there during the war.

Early Life in Burnside

Burnside was once a busy place for shipping goods. Trains and steamboats carried products in and out of the town. Its lumber mills were very active, sending wood all over the world. The town had many shops, restaurants, churches, a bank, and hotels. It even had Burnside Academy, which was the first Wesleyan preparatory school in Kentucky.

Moving the Town

In the early 1950s, something big happened. The entire town of Burnside had to be moved to higher ground. This was because Lake Cumberland was being created by building a dam. The old town would have been underwater.

A famous American author, Harriette Simpson Arnow, lived in Burnside when she was a child. She is well-known for her book The Dollmaker.

Birthplace of Boy Scouts?

Burnside is one of several places that claim to be where the first Boy Scout troop in the United States started. In 1908, two years before the Boy Scouts of America was officially formed, a woman named Mrs. Myra Greeno Bass organized a local troop of 15 boys. She used official Boy Scout materials that she had gotten from England.

There is a sign at the edge of town that says Burnside is the "Birthplace of Boy Scouts in America." An official state historical marker also remembers this early troop.
