A Look Back: Burnside's History

How Burnside Got Its Name

Burnside has an interesting past! In 1881, an Irish couple named Patrick and Mary King bought a large piece of land. They named their property Burnside. This name comes from a Gaelic word, burn, which means creek. Their land was right next to Whalley Creek.

Later, in 1918, the whole area, which used to be called Running Creek, was officially renamed Burnside.

Schools and Colleges Open

Over the years, several important schools opened in Burnside:

  • Nambour Special School welcomed its first students on January 24, 1977.
  • Burnside State School opened its doors on January 23, 1978.
  • Burnside State High School started teaching students on January 30, 1979.
  • St Joseph's Catholic High School moved to Burnside in 1979. It was later renamed St John's College in 1985.

In 1980, leaders decided to build a TAFE campus in Burnside. Construction began the very next year, in 1981.
