History of Burr Oak
Burr Oak was first planned out in 1871. It officially became a city in 1880. The city got its name from a nearby stream called Burr Oak Creek.
The first post office in Burr Oak opened in June 1871. This made it easier for people to send and receive mail.

Education in Burr Oak
Students in Burr Oak attend schools in the Rock Hills USD 107 public school district. This district is based in Mankato. Burr Oak joined this school district in 2006. The sports teams for Rock Hills High School are called the Grizzlies.
Before 2006, Burr Oak schools combined with schools from Esbon in 1983. They formed the White Rock schools. The White Rock elementary and high schools were located in Burr Oak. Their high school mascot was the Eagles. Later, the Jewell-White Rock team was known as the Predators.
The original Burr Oak High School mascot was the Braves.
