George "Buster" Rhymes (born January 27, 1962) is a former professional football player from the United States. He played as a wide receiver and return specialist in two major leagues: the National Football League (NFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Buster Rhymes' Early Life and College Career
Buster Rhymes grew up in Liberty City, a neighborhood in Miami, Florida. He went to Miami Northwestern. In 1980, he decided to play football at the University of Oklahoma under coach Barry Switzer. During his senior year of high school (1979-1980), he was named the Athlete of the Year for Dade County, Florida.
At the University of Oklahoma, Buster became a very successful wide receiver. He was even recognized as an All-American player, which means he was considered one of the best college players in the country. He was about 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) tall and weighed around 218 lb (99 kg).
Playing in the NFL and CFL
Because of his great skills, Buster Rhymes was chosen by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 1985 NFL draft. He played for the Vikings for two seasons, in 1985 and 1986.
In 1985, Buster set a new NFL record for the most kick return yards in a single season, with 1,345 yards. This record was later broken by other players, but it remained a team record for the Vikings until 2013. He was also the last Vikings player to wear jersey number 88 before it was retired to honor another famous player, Alan Page.
After his time in the NFL, Rhymes moved to Canada. He played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL for two seasons (1988 and 1989). In 1988, he helped his team win the Grey Cup, which is the championship trophy for the CFL.
