History of Butterfield

Butterfield was first planned out in 1872. This means its streets and lots were drawn on a map. It grew because a railroad came through the area. The city officially became a town on April 5, 1885. It was named after William Butterfield, who originally owned the land where the city was built.

Butterfield Steam and Gas Engine Show

One of the most exciting things in Butterfield is the annual Steam and Gas Engine Show. This event happens every year on the third full weekend in August. It first started in 1967. About 15,000 people come to visit this show each year! It's a great chance to see old engines and learn about history.

Transportation

Minnesota State Highway 60 is the main road that runs through Butterfield. It helps people travel to and from the city.

There are also railroad tracks nearby. The Union Pacific Railroad has two lines, called the Worthington Subdivision and Fairmont Subdivision. These lines meet just east of the city.
