This quiet community is found about 16 miles east of Orr. It sits where two county roads meet: Saint Louis County Road 23 (also called Orr–Buyck Road) and County Road 24 (known as Crane Lake Road). Buyck is also about 34 miles northeast of the town of Cook.
Exploring Buyck's Natural Setting
Buyck is nestled right on the edge of the beautiful Kabetogama State Forest. This forest offers a lot of nature to explore. The Vermilion River also flows right through the community, adding to its natural charm.
A Glimpse into Buyck's History
The first people likely settled in Buyck because of a "gold rush" in the area. At first, there weren't many businesses. But as the community grew, it developed important services like a school and a church.
A post office was opened in Buyck in 1913. It helped people send and receive mail for many years before closing in 1963. The community was named after Charles Buyck, who was one of the first settlers and later became a county official.
What Does the Name "Buyck" Mean?
The name of the township, Buyck, comes from the Buyck family. Members of this family have spread out over time and have become part of different cultures and legal systems. For example, Mark W. Buyck, Jr., was a U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina in the 1980s.
