Claude Randolph Taylor was an important American football and basketball coach. He led teams at several colleges. These included Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina. He also coached at Tillotson College in Texas. This school is now part of Huston–Tillotson University. He coached at Bluefield State University in West Virginia. Finally, he coached at Kentucky State College for Negroes. This school is now known as Kentucky State University. Taylor also coached basketball at Johnson C. Smith for one season. Taylor grew up in Harlem, a neighborhood in New York City. He went to DeWitt Clinton High School. There, he was a star athlete. He excelled in both football and track.
After high school, he attended Tufts College. This school is now called Tufts University. At Tufts, he continued to play football and basketball. He also ran track. In 1927, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. During his senior year, he was recognized as the best all-around athlete at his school.
