CBS Children's Film Festival facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

CBS Children's Film Festival (also known as CBS Children's Hour) was a TV show that ran from 1967 to 1984. It showed live-action movies from many different countries, made especially for kids. Some of these movies were dubbed, meaning their original language was changed into English.

The show first started in February 1967. It didn't have a regular time slot at first, appearing on Saturday mornings, Sunday afternoons, or even weekday afternoons. By 1971, it became a regular part of CBS's Saturday morning lineup. Each episode was an hour long, and some movies were shortened to fit the time.

The show was hosted by the famous puppet characters Kukla, Fran and Ollie. These characters were brought to life by puppeteer Burr Tillstrom and actress Fran Allison.

Changes to the Show

In 1977, Kukla, Fran and Ollie stopped hosting the show. The program's name also changed to CBS Saturday Film Festival.

Why the Show Ended

In 1978, CBS decided to cancel the Saturday Film Festival. They replaced it with a new show called 30 Minutes. This show was like a news magazine for young people, similar to the adult show 60 Minutes.

However, 30 Minutes was canceled in 1982. So, CBS brought back the Saturday Film Festival! It ran for two more years before CBS finally canceled it for good in 1984.

Later Narrators

During the show's final years in the 1980s, actor Ray Bolger helped narrate some of the episodes. You might know him as the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz movie!
