The Most Outstanding Player Award is a special prize given out every year to the very best player in the Canadian Football League (CFL). To decide who wins, two players are chosen to compete for it. One player comes from the East Division and wins the Terry Evanshen Trophy. The other player comes from the West Division and wins the Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy. The final winner of the Most Outstanding Player Award is picked by sports reporters who cover football, known as the Football Reporters of Canada.
The award started in 1953 and was first called the Schenley Award. It was named after a company called Schenley Distillers Corporation. This award was created to honor the top player in the Canadian Rugby Union, which was one of the leagues that existed before the CFL. Schenley stopped sponsoring the award in 1988. Since then, no company has sponsored the award. Famous sports broadcasters like Ernie Calcutt, John Badham, and Pierre Dufault used to present this award.
