CNBC-e is a TV channel from Turkey that you can watch for free. It started broadcasting again on June 10, 2024, and is run by companies like NBCUniversal, Comcast, and İlbak Holding. Before this, a channel with the same name was on air from 2000 to 2015, owned by NBCUniversal and the Doğuş Media Group.

Exploring the History of CNBC-e

How Kanal E Began (1995–2000)

In 1995, a person named Hakan Çizem started a TV channel called Kanal E. This was the first channel in Turkey focused on news about money and business. Later, in 1998, another company bought Kanal E. But then, due to some business challenges, the channel was sold again. Eventually, Doğuş Group bought Kanal E. This group also owned another news channel called NTV.

CNBC-e's Popular Years and Closure (2000–2015)

CNBC-e
The CNBC-e logo used between 2000 and 2015.

To make the channel more popular, Doğuş Holding teamed up with NBCUniversal, which owns the famous CNBC channel. They changed Kanal E's name to CNBC-e. NBCUniversal owned half of the channel.

CNBC-e had different shows for different times of the day. During the day, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, it showed news about business and money for adults. In the evenings, it aired popular TV shows from American channels like FOX, HBO, The CW, ABC, NBC, and CBS. They also showed movies, sometimes with subtitles or dubbed in Turkish. On weekends, there was a special block of cartoons and shows for kids from Nickelodeon.

In 2011, CNBC-e started broadcasting in high-definition (HD) quality. The channel also changed its screen format to 16:9 aspect ratio for a wider view. The channel's logo colors were inspired by the colorful peafowl logo of its partner channel, NBC.

Content Adjustments and Viewer Feedback

The channel sometimes received warnings from Turkey's TV and Radio Council (RTÜK). This was because some shows from other countries had content that the council felt needed to be adjusted for Turkish audiences. For example, some scenes in movies and series were edited to be more suitable for family viewing. The channel tried to explain these changes to its viewers. Also, any mention of tobacco products was hidden with a flower symbol. Even the kids' cartoons on the Nickelodeon block were sometimes adjusted.

Why CNBC-e Closed Down

In 2015, a company called Discovery Communications decided to buy CNBC-e. The deal was finished in October 2015. On November 6, 2015, CNBC-e stopped broadcasting. A new channel called TLC Turkey took its place. This news was shared on CNBC-e's social media and website. The channel's last show aired on November 5, 2015. After the channel closed, its website for business news moved to NTVPara.com.

CNBC-e's Return in 2024

For a few years, people who used to work at CNBC-e, like its former manager Artunç Kocabalkan, talked about bringing the channel back. They had been working on this idea since 2021. In 2023, the new owner, İlbak Holding, and CNBC's official websites announced that the channel would reopen. In 2024, you could see advertisements on billboards announcing its return. The channel's social media pages announced that it would relaunch on June 10, 2024. And just as they said, CNBC-e started broadcasting again on that day.
