About Comcast
Who Leads Comcast?

Comcast Offices Around the World
Comcast's main office is in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They also have offices in other big cities like Atlanta, Detroit, Denver, and New York City. In Philadelphia, they have two very tall buildings, the Comcast Center and the Comcast Technology Center. These are some of the tallest skyscrapers in Pennsylvania! As of 2019, Comcast had about 184,000 employees working for them.
Working at Comcast
Comcast has sometimes faced criticism about how it treats its employees. However, it has also been recognized as a great place to work by several magazines and journals. For example, CableFAX magazine and The Boston Globe have listed Comcast among the top places to work. The company is also known for its diverse workforce.
Comcast's Money Matters
Comcast is a very successful company. It has made a profit every year from 2006 to 2022. In 2020, it was ranked 28th among the largest U.S. companies by total money earned. In 2022, Comcast reported earning about $15.4 billion.
Helping Communities
Comcast helps schools by offering low-cost internet and cable services. They also have a foundation, the Comcast Foundation, that supports many good causes.
Comcast's Journey Through Time
Starting Small: American Cable Systems
In 1963, a man named Ralph J. Roberts and his two partners bought a small cable company called American Cable Systems. It was in Tupelo, Mississippi, had only five channels, and served 12,000 customers. In 1965, they bought a company that specialized in placing products in supermarkets. Later, in 1968, they even bought a franchise of Muzak, which plays background music in stores.
Becoming Comcast
The company officially became Comcast Corporation in 1969. In 1972, Comcast became a public company, meaning people could buy shares in it. In 1977, they started offering HBO to their customers.
In the 1980s, Comcast grew a lot. They bought a big part of Group W Cable, which doubled their number of customers to 1 million. They also invested in QVC, a shopping channel, and bought a mobile phone company, becoming a mobile phone operator for the first time.
Growing Bigger (1990–2001)
In 1990, Ralph Roberts' son, Brian L. Roberts, became the president of Comcast. The company continued to grow by buying other cable and cellular phone companies. By 1994, Comcast was the third-largest cable company in the U.S., with about 3.5 million customers.
In 1996, Comcast started offering internet service. They also formed Comcast Spectacor, which owns the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. In 1997, Microsoft invested $1 billion in Comcast, and the company launched its digital TV service. They also gained control of E! Entertainment. By the end of 1997, Comcast had grown to serve many major cities.
In 1999, Comcast bought Lenfest Communications, which was a large cable operator in the Philadelphia area. This made Comcast the main cable provider in that region.
The Largest U.S. Cable Provider (2001–Present)
In 2001, Comcast announced plans to buy AT&T Broadband, which was the biggest cable TV company at the time. This huge deal was completed in 2002, making Comcast the largest cable TV company in the United States with over 22 million customers! This also led to the creation of Comcast Advertising Sales.
In 2004, Comcast tried to buy The Walt Disney Company, but the deal didn't happen. In 2005, Comcast and Sony Pictures Entertainment teamed up to buy MGM and United Artists, famous movie studios.
In 2005, Comcast also bought Susquehanna Communications, another cable and internet provider. In 2006, they bought thePlatform, a software company that helps manage online media.
In 2008, Comcast bought Plaxo, a company that helps people manage their contacts online.
Buying Adelphia
In 2005, Comcast and Time Warner Cable agreed to buy the assets of Adelphia Cable, which was going through a difficult time. This deal was completed in 2006, and it helped Comcast become even bigger.
Bringing in NBCUniversal
In 2009, news spread that Comcast was interested in buying NBCUniversal. This company owns the NBC television network, cable channels like USA Network and Syfy, and Universal Pictures (the movie studio). After some talks, Comcast agreed to buy a controlling share (51%) of NBCUniversal in 2010. The deal was approved in 2011. In 2013, Comcast bought the rest of NBCUniversal, making it a fully owned part of Comcast.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Comcast's profits went down, partly because their theme parks like Universal Studios had to limit visitors or close.
Attempt to Buy Time Warner Cable
In 2014, Comcast tried to buy Time Warner Cable for a lot of money. This would have added many more cities to Comcast's service areas. However, the deal faced concerns from regulators and was eventually called off in 2015.
Adding DreamWorks Animation
In 2016, Comcast's NBCUniversal division bought DreamWorks Animation for $3.8 billion. This brought popular movie franchises like Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon, and Kung Fu Panda under the Comcast umbrella.
Getting into Cellular Service
In 2016, Comcast partnered with Verizon Wireless to launch its own cellular network service. This new service, called Xfinity Mobile, was launched in 2017. It allows Comcast to offer a "quadruple play" of services: TV, internet, home phone, and mobile phone.
Acquiring Sky Group
Comcast also tried to buy parts of 21st Century Fox in 2017, but that deal didn't happen. Instead, in 2018, Comcast focused on buying Sky Group, a major media company in Europe. After a bidding war, Comcast successfully bought all of Sky for about $40 billion. This made Sky a fully owned part of Comcast in November 2018.
In 2023, Comcast and Disney agreed that Comcast would sell its share in Hulu, a popular streaming service.
