How it Started
The story of Doğuş Group began in 1951. A man named Ayhan Şahenk started investing in construction. His company, Doğuş Construction, became a top builder. They built many roads, ports, and hospitals in Turkey.
In 1966, Doğuş Construction was officially founded. That same year, they started Antur Tourism. They also bought Club Alantur, a hotel in Alanya. In the late 1970s, Ayhan Şahenk also started investing in banks.
During the 1980s, Turkey's economy changed. It moved more towards private businesses. Ayhan Şahenk then expanded into new areas. He worked with big companies like Volkswagen for cars. He also partnered with Sheraton Hotels and Resorts for tourism.
In 1989, Ayhan Şahenk's son, Ferit Şahenk, came back to Istanbul. His father sent him to learn at Garanti Bank. After eight years, he joined the main company. He helped the group grow even more.
In 1998, Ferit Şahenk bought two food store chains. He also started the TV channel NTV. He paid for this growth by selling some shares of Garanti Bank. He also created a special team called Humanitas. This team helps find talented people for the group. By 1999, Doğuş Group was earning about $5.7 billion each year.
In April 2001, Ferit took over Doğuş Group. This happened after his father, Ayhan Şahenk, passed away. Ferit sold a part of Garanti Bank to General Electric in 2004. This sale was worth $1.6 billion. It was an important step for banks in Turkey. Doğuş Group also owns many media companies. These companies get a big share of the advertising money in Turkey.
