Nusret Gökçe, known to many as Salt Bae, is a famous Turkish butcher, chef, and restaurateur. He was born in 1983. He became super famous in January 2017 because of his special way of cutting meat and sprinkling salt. This unique style turned him into an internet meme.
Nusret Gökçe started a chain of fancy steak restaurants called Nusr-Et. As of 2021, these restaurants have locations in many countries. You can find them in Turkey, Greece, the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. The name "Nusr-Et" comes from his own name, Nusret, and the Turkish word et, which means "meat".

Early Life and Beginnings
Nusret Gökçe was born in Paşalı, a small village in the Erzurum Province of Turkey. His family was Kurdish. His father, Faik, worked in a mine. Because his family needed money, Nusret had to leave school when he was in the sixth grade. This was when he was about 11 or 12 years old. He started working as an apprentice for a butcher in Istanbul.
Becoming a Chef and Restaurateur
Between 2007 and 2010, Nusret Gökçe traveled to different countries. He visited places like Argentina and the United States. He worked in local restaurants for free to learn more about cooking and running a restaurant. He wanted to gain as much experience as possible.
After he returned to Turkey, Gökçe opened his very first restaurant in Istanbul in 2010. Later, in 2014, he opened another restaurant in Dubai.
How Salt Bae Became Famous
In January 2017, Nusret Gökçe became much more widely known. This happened because of some videos and memes that went viral online. These videos showed him cutting meat in a very smooth way and then sprinkling salt. One famous video was called "Ottoman Steak." He posted it on his restaurant's Twitter account.
This video was watched over 16 million times on Instagram! People started calling him "Salt Bae" because of his unique way of sprinkling salt. He would drop the salt from his fingertips onto his forearm, and then it would fall onto the dish. Because of how popular these videos became, Nusret Gökçe's fame grew a lot. He has since served many famous people and important leaders from all over the world.
Helping Others
Nusret Gökçe has also been involved in charity work. He has helped build a school in his hometown of Erzurum. He shared on Instagram that he built a library, a guest house, a mosque, an English education center, and a computer lab in the town. He believes in giving back to his community.
