Early Chophouses in London
The idea of a "chophouse" began in London, England, way back in the 1690s. These places were special restaurants that served individual portions of meat, which were called "chops." Imagine a big piece of meat, often from a lamb or pig, cooked just for one person!
For a long time, these chophouses stuck to their traditional ways of cooking. Even when new cooking styles became popular from other parts of Europe, they kept things classic. Back then, most chophouses were usually only open for men.
Steakhouses in the United States
Steakhouses started to become popular in the United States in the mid-1800s. They grew out of older inns and bars that began to focus more on serving meat dishes. Steakhouses can be very casual places where you can relax, or they can be fancy restaurants for special occasions.
Famous Old Steakhouses
One of the oldest chophouses in London is called Simpson's Tavern. It's considered a very important part of London's history and still looks much like it did in the 1800s!
In the United States, the oldest steakhouse that has been open continuously is the Old Homestead Steakhouse in New York City. It first opened its doors in 1868. Before that, New York City had other chophouses, like Cobweb Hall. This place was famous for its mutton chops (lamb meat) and also served beefsteaks, lamb kidneys, bacon, and potatoes.
