How Doğuş Group Started
The story of Doğuş Group began in 1951. A person named Ayhan Şahenk started investing in construction. His company, Doğuş Construction, became a top builder of roads, ports, and hospitals in Turkey.
Doğuş Construction officially started on June 17, 1966. In the same year, another company called Antur Tourism was founded, and Club Alantur in Alanya was bought. Ayhan Şahenk later started investing in banks in the late 1970s.
In the 1980s, Turkey's economy changed, becoming more open to businesses. Ayhan Şahenk then expanded into importing cars, tourism, and food. He worked with big international companies like Volkswagen and Sheraton Hotels and Resorts.
A New Leader Steps In
In 1989, Ayhan Şahenk's son, Ferit Şahenk, came back to Istanbul. His father sent him to learn at Garanti Bank. After eight years, Ferit joined the main company and kept adding new businesses.
Starting in 1998, he bought two food store chains and began running NTV, a TV channel. He helped pay for this growth by selling some parts of Garanti Bank to the public. Ferit also created a special team called Humanitas to find talented people for the group. By 1999, Doğuş Group's yearly earnings reached about US$5.7 billion.
In April 2001, Ferit took over Doğuş Group after his father, Ayhan Şahenk, passed away. He sold a part of Garanti Bank to General Electric in 2004. This was an important step for banks in Turkey, especially after the country faced financial challenges in 2001. Ferit also manages Turkish media companies, which get a big share of the country's advertising money.
