Journey of the Cadotte River
The Cadotte River begins its journey in Northern Alberta. It starts north of a town called High Prairie. Here, the land is about 700 meters (2,300 feet) above sea level.
Flowing North and West
The river first flows north. As it travels, it creates a series of small lakes. Eventually, it flows into a larger body of water called Cadotte Lake. Another river, the Marten River, also flows into Cadotte Lake from the east.
The Cadotte River then flows out of the northern side of Cadotte Lake. This spot is very close to the small community of Cadotte Lake and the Cadotte Airport. At this point, the river is about 580 meters (1,900 feet) above sea level.
Meeting Other Rivers
After leaving Cadotte Lake, the river turns and flows west. It passes under two highways, Highway 989 and Highway 688.
As it continues west, another river joins it. This is the Otter River, which flows from the Buffalo Head Hills. The Cadotte River then turns north. It flows alongside the Peace River for a while. The Little Cadotte River also joins it from the west.
Joining the Peace River
Finally, the Cadotte River empties into the Peace River. It joins as a "right tributary," meaning it flows in from the right side if you are looking downstream. This meeting point is in the Cadotte/Peace River Remote Provincial Forest Recreation Area. This area is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of the town of Peace River.
The Cadotte River finishes its journey at an elevation of about 305 meters (1,000 feet). Its entire path covers about 56 kilometers (35 miles) from where it starts.
