History of Caimito
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Long ago, Spain controlled Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain and the United States signed a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico was given to the United States. It became an unincorporated territory, which means it's managed by the U.S. but isn't a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War (which is now called the Department of Defense) took a special count of people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Caimito and a nearby barrio called Vegas had a combined population of 1,405 people.
