Calvin Lashon Woods (born April 3, 1999), known to his fans as Calboy, is an American rapper and singer from Calumet City, Illinois. He became famous for his song "Envy Me" in 2018. This song was a huge hit, selling so many copies that it was certified five times platinum! It also reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. Because of the song's success, Calboy signed with Polo Grounds Music and RCA Records. They released "Envy Me" as the first song from his first music collection, an extended play (EP) called Wildboy (2019). This EP reached number 30 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Early life

Calvin Lashon Woods was born on April 3, 1999, in Chicago. He later moved to Calumet City, Illinois. Growing up, his family didn't always have a lot of money, and they moved between small homes and apartments. Calboy found that music was a great way to express his feelings about these challenges. He is one of five children raised by his single mother. His cousin was the rapper King Von.

Career

2016–2017: Starting out

Calboy began his music journey by releasing his first mixtape, The Chosen One, on July 7, 2017. A mixtape is like a collection of songs that artists often release to share their music with fans. Later that year, on December 7, 2017, he released his second mixtape, Anxiety.

2018–2021: Big hits and record deals

On June 18, 2018, Calboy released his third mixtape, Calboy, the Wildboy. One of the songs from this mixtape was "Unjudge Me," which featured another rapper named Moneybagg Yo.

His song "Envy Me" came out on September 13, 2018, and quickly became very popular. This song was later included on his first EP, Wildboy, which was released on May 31, 2019. "Envy Me" reached number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and sold enough copies to be certified triple platinum, meaning it sold millions of copies! Because of this success, Calboy signed a deal with Polo Grounds Music and RCA Records.

After Wildboy, Calboy released another EP called Long Live the Kings in March 2020. A few months later, he released a special "deluxe" version of this EP with six new songs. In August 2020, Calboy was chosen for XXL magazine's "Freshman Class," which highlights new and rising hip-hop artists.

In March 2021, Calboy released "Miseducation," a song featuring famous rapper Lil Wayne. This song was meant to be on his first full album, Redemption, but the album's release was delayed.

By early 2022, Calboy shared that he was feeling unhappy with his record labels, Polo Grounds and RCA Records, because of disagreements about his music and career.

2022–Present

Despite his challenges, Calboy has continued to release new music. He released two albums during this time: "Black Heart" in 2022 and "UNCHAINED" in 2023.

Calboy's stage name comes from combining his real first name, Calvin, with the character "Cowboy" from the 1979 movie The Warriors.
