Calera is a town in Bryan County, Oklahoma, United States. It is about five miles south of Durant. Calera is also about 10 miles north of the Texas state line. In 2020, about 2,906 people lived there. This means the town is growing! Calera is part of the Texoma region.

Calera is located in the state of Oklahoma. It covers an area of about 2.6 square miles (6.7 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

The town of Calera is very close to Durant. Their town limits touch each other. However, the main downtown areas of Calera and Durant are about five miles apart.

The Story of Calera: A Look at its History

Calera was first known as Cale Switch or Cale. This was in 1872. A railroad, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railway, built tracks through the Choctaw Nation. A small community grew up next to these tracks. It was on the east side. The name Cale came from a railroad official named George W. Cale.

Seventeen years later, the people of Cale Switch got their first post office. This was in 1889. That same year, the town was called Sterrett. But the railroad officials, also known as Katy, did not want to use that name. The discussion about the name went on for 21 years! Finally, in 1910, the town agreed to be called Calera.

When it was first started, Cale was in Blue County. This area was part of the Moshulatubbee District of the Choctaw Nation.

Calera is home to Calera Public Schools. The school system is known as 2A by the OSSAA (Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association). About 700 students attend these schools. The school mascot is the Calera Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs.

  • Girls' Softball: In 2014, the girls' softball team made it to the Area Quarterfinals. The slow-pitch softball team went to the state tournament in 2014, 2015, and 2016. The 2014 season was the first time any girls' team at Calera High School reached a state tournament.
  • Cross-Country: Calera has had three individual cross-country state champions. They also had three 1600m state champions. These were won by Cale Eidson.
  • FFA Chapter: The local FFA (Future Farmers of America) Chapter was named a Three Star National FFA Chapter. This happened at the National Convention from 2007 to 2011. They have also done very well in Career Development Events at state and national levels.
