Caltowie is a small town located in the Mid North region of South Australia. You can find it along the Wilkins Highway. It's also on the railway line that connects Crystal Brook to Broken Hill, sitting between the towns of Gladstone and Jamestown.
History of Caltowie
Caltowie got its first name from European settlers: 'Carcowie'. This name meant 'lizard's water hole'. It was a busy spot for 'teamsters'. These were people who drove wagons pulled by horses or oxen. They often stopped here when crossing the Yackamoorundie Creek.
The government officially planned the town of Caltowie in 1871. This happened a few months after the area, called the 'Hundred of Caltowie', was officially named. A 'hundred' was an old way of dividing land in some parts of Australia.
