History of Camarones
What's in a Name?
The name Camarones means "shrimp" in Spanish. It got its name from the Camarones River, which flows nearby.
A Look Back in Time
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States in 1898. This was part of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 620 people lived in the Camarones neighborhood at that time.
