How Campbell Got Its Name

The town of Campbell was created in 1851. It was named after Erasmus D. Campbell. He was once a Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin, which is a high-ranking political leader in the state.

Today, the town of Campbell is mostly on a large island. This island is surrounded by the Mississippi River, the Black River, and Lake Onalaska. People have always called this area "French Island."

One of the first settlers on the island was Joseph French. He arrived in May 1851. His family came from England. Later, many French-Canadian farmers from Quebec, Canada, also settled on the island. This is another reason why it's called French Island.
