French Island is a special kind of community called a census-designated place (CDP). It is located in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, in the United States. In 2010, about 4,207 people lived there.

French Island is on an island of the same name. However, the island and the CDP are not exactly the same size. A small part of the island is actually part of the city of La Crosse. The entire island is part of the larger La Crosse metropolitan area. French Island is also part of the town of Campbell. Almost everyone in the town of Campbell lives on French Island.

Where is French Island Located?

French Island is in the western part of La Crosse County. It is surrounded by water that connects to the mighty Mississippi River.

  • To the west, you'll find French Slough, French Lake, and Lake Onalaska.
  • To the east, there's the Black River and Richmond Bay.

Two parts of the dam that create Lake Onalaska also connect to French Island. One part is at the start of French Lake, and the other holds back the Black River. The neighborhood of West La Crosse is in the southern part of French Island.

How Big is French Island?

According to the United States Census Bureau, the French Island CDP covers about 2.520 square miles (6.53 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 2.022 square miles (5.24 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.498 square miles (1.29 square kilometers), is water. The entire island itself has a land area of about 11.781 square kilometers (4.549 square miles).

How Do People Get Around?

French Island is connected to the mainland by roads and bridges.

  • You can reach it by car using the I-90 Mississippi River Bridge.
  • Another way is from North La Crosse using the Clinton Street Bridge. This bridge is at the very southern tip of the island.
  • There's also the La Crosse West Channel Bridge. This bridge connects Barron Island to La Crescent, Minnesota, which is about four miles downstream.

For public transportation, La Crosse MTU offers bus service. You can take a bus from French Island to North La Crosse.

The La Crosse Regional Airport is also located on the northern part of French Island. It is within the city limits of La Crosse.
