Campbeltown Loch is a beautiful sea loch located in Scotland. It's a small inlet of the sea, found near the southern tip of the Kintyre Peninsula. The loch faces east, looking out towards the Firth of Clyde. The town of Campbeltown sits right at the head of the loch, and the loch is named after this town.
There's also a special island in the loch called Davaar Island. When the tide is low, you can even walk to Davaar Island across a natural path made of pebbles! It's interesting to know that while the loch is named after Campbeltown in English, in Scottish Gaelic, the town's name, "Ceann Loch Chille Chiarain," actually comes from the loch itself.
The Famous Song
Campbeltown Loch is well-known because of a popular folk song that shares its name. This song became very famous in the 1960s, thanks to musician Andy Stewart.
The song is a fun and imaginative tune. It talks about the area's history, especially its connection to making a special local drink. The song playfully wishes the loch was filled with this famous local product, imagining how wonderful that would be. It's a humorous way to celebrate Campbeltown's heritage and its well-known industry.
The tune for "Campbeltown Loch" is actually a march written for bagpipes. It's called The Glendaruel Highlanders.
