History of Caníaco
Becoming Part of the United States
Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This war was fought between Spain and the United States in 1898. After the war ended, an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898 was signed. This treaty meant that Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States.
Early Population Records
After becoming part of the United States, Puerto Rico was considered an unincorporated territory. This means it's a U.S. territory but not a state. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census (a count of the population) in Puerto Rico. This census showed that 631 people lived in Caníaco barrio at that time.
