History of Canadice
The name Canadice comes from older local languages. It's a changed version of "Skaneadice," which means 'long lake'. This name was used for Canadice Lake. In the Onondaga and Seneca languages, it would have been written as Ska-ne-o'-dice.
Settlers first arrived around 1795, near the shore of Honeoye Lake. The town of Canadice was officially created on April 15, 1829. It was formed from a part of the Town of Richmond. However, it took until the next year for the town to be fully organized. A small part of Canadice was later given back to Richmond in 1836.
By 1868, Canadice had three churches. These included the Methodist Episcopal, Methodist Protestant, and Wesleyan Methodist churches.
Geography and Lakes
Canadice covers a total area of about 32.5 square miles (84.01 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 30.0 square miles (77.31 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 2.4 square miles (6.70 square kilometers), is water.
The town is known for its lakes. Honeoye Lake forms part of its eastern border. Hemlock Lake is on the western border. Canadice Lake is completely inside the town. Both Hemlock Lake and Canadice Lake are smaller Finger Lakes.
The southern and western edges of Canadice also form part of the border with Livingston County. New York State Route 15A is a main road that runs north and south through the town.
