Candanchú is a popular ski resort located in the Pyrenees mountains of Spain. It is found near the town of Canfranc in the Huesca province. The resort's name, Candanchú, comes from the French words "Camp d'Anjou." This means it was once a military camp for a French royal family. Candanchú is also close to the historic Camino de Santiago route.

This ski resort is in the Aragonese Pyrenees. It is only about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from the border with France. The city of Jaca is about 27 kilometers (17 miles) away. Near Candanchú, you can find the ruins of an old hospital. This hospital, called Santa Cristina of Somport, helped pilgrims on their journey.

About the Ski Resort

Candanchú has 59 kilometers (37 miles) of marked ski slopes. It is one of the oldest ski resorts in the Pyrenees. The resort is famous for its very steep and challenging slopes. One of these tough slopes is called Tubo Zapatilla. The highest point at Candanchú is La Tuca peak. It reaches 2,400 meters (7,874 feet) above sea level. This gives skiers a big drop of 900 meters (2,953 feet).

The main part of the resort is a town built just for skiers. It has hotels and apartments. This town is located at 1,500 meters (4,921 feet) above sea level. From here, main chair lifts take people up the mountain. The resort covers two different mountain valleys. These are called Pista Grande - El Tobazo and La Tuca. Pista Grande - El Tobazo is the lower area with the town and parking. You take a chair lift to reach the higher La Tuca valley.

Candanchú also offers a special ski pass. This pass lets you ski at the nearby Astún resort too.

Ski Lifts

Most of the ski lifts at Candanchú are modern. They can carry many people up the mountain quickly. The resort has:

  • 6 chair lifts
  • 18 ski tows (also known as drag lifts)

Ski Slopes

The resort offers 51 ski slopes. These slopes have different difficulty levels for all skiers.

  •       10 slopes for beginners. These are the easiest.
  •       11 slopes that are easy.
  •       18 slopes for intermediate skiers. These are a bit harder.
  •       12 slopes for expert skiers. These are the most challenging.

Besides these slopes, there is a 35-kilometer (22-mile) cross-country ski circuit. This circuit is shared with the Somport resort in France.
