The Story of Candel
How Candel Was Created
Pedro Steinbruch was a candy maker. He moved to Uruguay from Poland in 1930. He was looking for a new life. After working in different jobs, Pedro started making his own candies. He used an old recipe he knew. He mixed all the ingredients in a large pan. This is how he first created Candel.
Candel Becomes Popular
At first, Candels were sold in schools. You could also find them in small shops and kiosks. These places were mostly in Montevideo, Uruguay's capital city. The candy quickly became a local favorite.
The Astra Brand Begins
About ten years later, another person joined the story. His name was Jaime Grill. He was a young man who married Pedro Steinbruch's daughter. Jaime helped turn the small family candy business into a bigger company. In 1940, he created the brand name Astra. He also started using machines to make the candies. This made it possible to produce many more Candels.
Candel Astra grew to be a very famous candy in Uruguay. Over the years, its sales went up and down. In 2002, the company faced some difficulties. Because of this, the business was sold. Another company called La Ronda bought Astra. They continued to make and sell Candel under the Astra brand.
