A Glimpse into Candelero Arriba's Past
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Puerto Rico used to be a territory of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Since then, Puerto Rico has been an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it belongs to the U.S. but is not a state.
Early Population Counts
Soon after Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people. This was like a first census for the island. In 1899, the census showed that 811 people lived in the Candelero Arriba barrio.
