History of Candor
People first started settling in the area that is now Candor around 1794. They bought the land as part of a large land deal called the Watkins and Flint Patent.
The Town of Candor was officially created in 1811. It was formed from a part of the Town of Spencer. The people living there wanted to name their new town "Washington." However, they couldn't because another town in New York already had that name. No one is quite sure how the name "Candor" was chosen.
Candor was also featured in a 1958 book called Small Town in Mass Society. In the book, the community was given the made-up name "Springdale."
