Canoe River

The Canoe River is a river located in southeastern Massachusetts. It stretches for about 14.4 miles (23.2 kilometers) and is an important part of the larger Taunton River Watershed. This river helps supply drinking water to many communities in the area.

Where Does the Canoe River Flow?

The Canoe River begins near Lake Massapoag in the town of Sharon. From there, it gently winds its way south. It passes through several towns, including Sharon, Foxborough, Mansfield, and Easton. Finally, the river flows into Winnecunnet Pond in Norton.

Canoe River's Journey to the Ocean

After flowing into Winnecunnet Pond, the water continues its journey. It leaves the pond as the Snake River. This river then flows into Lake Sabbatia. Lake Sabbatia was created by building a dam on the Mill River. The Mill River eventually joins the main Taunton River. All these rivers together finally empty into Narragansett Bay and then into the Atlantic Ocean.

Why is the Canoe River Important?

The Canoe River is very important because it provides drinking water for around 50,000 people in the region. This water comes from an underground area called an aquifer, which is like a natural sponge holding water. Because it's such a vital water source, the Canoe River's aquifer has been named a "sole source aquifer." This means it's the only major source of drinking water for a large area.

Since 1991, the Canoe River has also been recognized as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This special title helps protect the river and its surroundings, making sure its water stays clean and safe for everyone.

A Look Back: History of the Canoe River

The Canoe River has had different names throughout history. The part of the river closer to its start in Sharon was once known as Massapoag Brook. In the 1800s, this section of the river was very busy. It powered six different industrial mills in Sharon, showing how important the river was for local businesses and industry back then.
