History of Canovanillas
Puerto Rico was once under the rule of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain and the United States signed the Treaty of Paris of 1898. This agreement meant that Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States government conducted a count of all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 950 people lived in the Canovanillas neighborhood at that time.
