History of Canton City

How Canton City Got Its Name

Canton City was first started as Canton Village in 1882. But there's a bit of a story about its name!

A post office, which handles mail, was moved to Canton City from a nearby place called Hensel. When it moved, it kept the name "Hensel Post Office." This is why many people call the town Hensel, and you might even see it marked as Hensel on road signs and maps.

However, the official and legal name of the town is Canton City. Even though it's often called Hensel, its true name is Canton.

The First Post Office

No old papers have been found to show exactly where the first Hensel Post Office was. But experts think it was about two miles southwest of today's Canton City.

It was likely on land that Joseph Erwin (or Irwin) settled. He was the first postmaster, starting on February 5, 1884.
