The students in Cantril attend schools that are part of the Van Buren County Community School District.
Before this, Cantril was part of the Fox Valley Community School District. That district used to have two schools. One was Cantril Elementary School, and the other was Fox Valley Jr./Sr. High School in Milton.
Later, the high school students from Fox Valley started going to Van Buren Junior/Senior High School in Keosauqua. This meant the Fox Valley high school closed. The elementary school and the district office then moved to Milton.
On July 1, 2004, the Fox Valley school district joined with the Van Buren Community School District. Then, on July 1, 2019, that district also merged into the current Van Buren County Community School District.
