The canyon gooseberry, also known as Ribes menziesii, is a type of currant plant. You can find it growing naturally only in California and Oregon.

This plant has about five or six different kinds, called varieties. They grow in the lower mountains of California, especially near the coast, and in canyons and hills closer to the ocean. You might also spot them in areas with chaparral, which is a type of shrubland.

What Does the Canyon Gooseberry Look Like?

The canyon gooseberry, Ribes menziesii, is a bushy plant that can grow up to 2 meters (about 6.5 feet) tall. It's a deciduous shrub, meaning it loses its leaves in the fall. Its branches are very prickly, so be careful!

The plant has green leaves that are a bit rounded and feel hairy. They also have tiny glands that make them smell nice.

Flowers and Fruit

This plant has pretty flowers that hang down. The outer parts of the flower, called sepals, are often fuchsia or purple. They bend backward, away from the rest of the flower. The inner parts, called petals, are white. They form a loose tube, and the plant's pollen-making parts, called stamens, stick out from it.

After the flowers, the plant grows purple gooseberries. These berries are edible, meaning you can eat them. However, they have many seeds and not much fruit, so most people don't find them very tasty. Plus, those sharp spines on the plant make it hard to pick the berries!

Different Kinds of Canyon Gooseberry

There are several varieties of the canyon gooseberry:

  • Ribes menziesii var. ixoderme — This kind is found in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains. You can learn more about it on Calflora.
  • Ribes menziesii var. menziesii — This variety grows in the Coast Ranges.
  • Ribes menziesii var. senile — You can find this one in Santa Cruz County, California.

Growing Canyon Gooseberry in Gardens

People sometimes grow Ribes menziesii in their gardens. It's considered an ornamental plant, which means it's grown for its beauty. It's also popular in native plant gardens and wildlife gardens, especially in places like coastal California where the climate is just right. Gardeners like it because its spring flowers are very attractive.
