Exploring Caonillas Arriba's Past
How Puerto Rico Became a U.S. Territory
The history of Caonillas Arriba is connected to the history of Puerto Rico itself. After a war between Spain and the United States called the Spanish–American War, Puerto Rico was given to the U.S. in 1898. This was part of an agreement known as the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a U.S. state.
Counting the People: Early Census Data
Just one year later, in 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. During this first census, they found that the Caonillas barrio had a population of 2,378 people.
