What is a Sea Stack?

Near Cape Kiwanda, there is a tall rock island in the ocean. It is called a sea stack. This particular sea stack is named Haystack Rock. It is about half a mile (0.8 kilometers) southwest of the cape.

Haystack Rock is one of three famous rocks along the Oregon Coast that share this name. The most well-known Haystack Rock is in Cannon Beach. These sea stacks are formed over many years by ocean waves.

The Duckbill Rock Formation

A special rock formation, known as the Duckbill, was once a popular sight at Cape Kiwanda. It was a unique sandstone structure that looked like a duck's bill. This formation was a natural arch.

Sadly, the Duckbill changed shape in August 2016. It is no longer there for visitors to see. Even though it's gone, the park still has many other amazing natural features to explore.
