Cape St. Francis is a special place located at the very edge of the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It marks the outer boundary of a large area of water called Conception Bay. This headland, or piece of land sticking out into the sea, is home to an important lighthouse.

Cape St. Francis Lighthouse

The Cape St. Francis Lighthouse helps ships find their way safely along the coast. Lighthouses are like beacons that guide sailors, especially at night or in bad weather.

History of the Lighthouse

The first lighthouse at Cape St. Francis was built a long time ago, in 1877. This shows how important this spot has been for guiding ships for many years. The lighthouse you see there today was first lit in 1957. It's a newer version designed to keep up with modern shipping needs.

What the Lighthouse Looks Like

The lighthouse is a white building with a wide vertical stripe. It has a special light, called a lantern, on top of a one-story building. This building also houses a fog signal. The entire structure is made of concrete, making it strong and durable.

The light itself is about 29 meters (95 feet) above the water. This height helps its light shine far out to sea. The light flashes white every 5 seconds, which is its unique signal. When it's foggy, the lighthouse also sends out a loud blast every 30 seconds to warn ships.

Who Manages the Lighthouse?

The Cape St. Francis Lighthouse is managed by the Canadian Coast Guard. They are responsible for keeping the light working and ensuring it helps ships navigate safely around the coast of Newfoundland.
